Mr. Coviello - Staff Advisor

(Warren, OH) Tribune Chronicle Assistant Managing Editor

Over the past 20 years Mr. Coviello has served as editorial page editor, features editor, news editor, copy editor, news reporter and sports writer at the Tribune. The Associated Press Society of Ohio named him best editorial writer in the Tribune's circulation class each of the last two years. He created The Ticket, a weekly entertainment tab, and Prime Time, a weekly section devoted to seniors citizens. He has won awards for investigative reporting, headline writing and sports writing. His investigation of local cemeteries sparked a change in Ohio funeral and cemetery laws. His investigation of the 2-year-old death of a Trumbull County man led to the solving of a murder after the death was originally ruled a suicide. Mr. Coviello is a graduate of Youngstown State University where he served as sports editor of the Jambar, the school's student newspaper.

Coviello is a part-time journalism instructor at YSU and the director of the Tribune's teen journalism program, four times rated the No. 1 teen journalism program in the United States. He is the adviser to Page One, the Tribune's teen section, which was twice rated No. 1 in the U.S. He is on the board of directors for the Tri-County Journalism Association, lectures at Journalism Education Association national conferences and is active in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. He is a member of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation's Youth Services Committee and the NAA Foundation's Youth Editorial Alliance advisory committee. He co-founded the NAA Foundation's Youth Readership Ambassadors Program.

Mr. Coviello's civic journalism projects include founding the Rock Off, an annual battle of teen bands that has raised more than $10,000 for Tod Children's Hospital; and founding the Fitness Challenge, an annual weight-loss competition that has raised more than $30,000 for local charities. He also helped start the One Book Two Counties literacy project in which thousands of residents in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties read the same book and engage in community discussion.
